COMP LIT 481: Introduction to Research and Interpreting Research and Practice I

COMP LIT 481 is the first part of a two-semester study  and interpreting. Although no previous translation or translation experience is required, students should have a solid knowledge of English and at least one other language. The course introduces students to research in the field of translation and interpreting courses and the number of practical skills required of professional translators and interpreters. Translation and translation is viewed throughout the subject as social, cultural and ethical and linguistic activities. Students work with written and spoken texts to develop an understanding of the capabilities of small text and structures and patterns of large text and to understand how to analyze both written and spoken texts. They are introduced to consecutive translation skills and simultaneously using spoken texts in a language lab. Role-playing activities are conducted so that students become familiar with the trinity of interpreted communication.

COMP LIT 482: Introduction to Interpreting and Translating Research and Practice II

COMP LIT 482 is the second component of a two-semester and translation studies throughout the scenario. In this course, students continue to build on the knowledge and skills acquired over the past semester. Students work to understand institutional frameworks and domain debates for specific institutions, acquire relevant English vocabulary and other languages and practice translating, visual and textual translation. This course is a selected “Service-Learning” course and is approved by the Civic Engagement and Service-Learning (CESL) office at Mass. Part of the course is designed to provide opportunities for students to participate in an out-of-class service project guided by relevant ideas from community partners and contributing to community benefit. Selected project sites have been selected and students, with intellectual assistance, will be paired with one or more community partners for the first three weeks of the semester. The CESL section of this study reflects the view that translation and translation are social, cultural and linguistic activities. Your knowledge of community service will enhance your understanding of the social, cultural, and ethical complexities of the role of translators and translators. It will provide you with personal information on the importance of interpreting and translating (and your absence) to members of communities whose English is not their main language. All projects will involve further reading of relevant literature. Successful completion of this course is a requirement of a Translation and Translation certificate for undergraduate students.

Graduate Translation and Interpretation Certificate

The and Interpreting Certificate is a nine credit card certificate. Students who wish to obtain a certificate are required to take two Comparative Literature courses and one subject related to their research program. All subjects listed in respect of the certificate must be at a level of 600 or higher.

1) COMP LIT 681 Introduction to Translation and Interpretation I is required for ALL students. 2) In the second lesson, students can choose to take the COMP LIT 682 Translation Introduction and Interpreting II or CL 751 Translation Theory.

The course will introduce students to research in the field of translation and interpreting courses as well as a number of practical skills required for professional translators and interpreters.
